WYSE COMPETITION
Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering
The WYSE Academic Challenge is a battery of tests that is created by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and offered to high school students. Subjects tested include English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, engineering graphics and computer fundamentals. The tests are designed to present a challenge to the brightest students and are written by a team of faculty at colleges and universities in Illinois and Missouri. They are presented in a multiple-choice format. The student has 40 minutes to complete tests that range in length from 30 questions (Computer Science) to 100 questions (English).
Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshmen level college curricula so as to present a bridge between secondary and higher education. Teams may consist from 6 to 14 students with each student taking at most 2 tests. Teams scores are based on scores in three core subjects – English, math, and chemistry. The remaining two subjects areas can be selected from physics, biology, engineering graphics or computer fundamentals.
Gibault’s WYSE Team won its Regional and Sectional in 2008 qualifying the entire team for the State competition.
